Making time to exercise as a family is the perfect way to boost your health while spending quality time together, and it doesn't have to cost a small fortune. For example, buy some sports equipment such as basketball hoops and soccer goals to turn your backyard into a fitness center.
Here are some recommendations on how to get started with family fitness activities that won't break the bank.
Yoga - Fitness begins at home, and whether you have a backyard, back patio or just a nice big space in your living room, family yoga can add both fitness and relaxation into the mix. Make sure each family member has their own yoga mat, and find an instructional video that works for your family.
Bocce or Croquet - This is another great low-impact form of exercise that's great fun for the whole family. Best for ages 7 and up, but relax the rules and everyone can join in.
Frisbee Golf - Frisbee golf, also known as disc golf, is exactly what it sounds like, and while it can be played with professional discs it is just as fun for the family with good old-fashioned Frisbees.
Backyard not big enough to appoint a few goals (trees, trash cans, etc.)? Head to a local park or, better yet, search for disc golf courses in your neighborhood.
Pool Memberships - Invest in a YMCA membership for the winter months and a local pool membership for the summer months, then go! Make sure you get in the water with the kids so you don't miss out on the exercise!
Kayaking - This is especially good for families with older children. Invest in kayaks if you can, and if you have storage space. If not, most lakes and rivers with recreational areas with have kayak and canoe rentals. Ask around!
Races are incredibly fun! 5K races can be walked if you're just getting started on your family fitness plan or have very young children, and many races donate proceeds to a deserving charity. This is a great resource for finding a race in your area.
Most importantly, make sure you set aside time in your schedule for fitness activities that work for your family. It's both fun and healthy!
